The placenta is embedded in the wall of the mum’s womb and the mums blood vessel fill it with blood. The baby’s umbilical cord branches out at the end like a tree of blood vessels and these poke into the placenta. So food in the mums blood goes into the baby’s blood vessels and is taken back along the umbilical cord to the the baby and circulates it’s body feeding all the cells.
