If people who are dying or very ill want ivf treatment they have to recieve councelling to talk about whether it is a good idea. The doctor will then decide whether they can go ahead and have ivf. I have read about men dying of cancer using their sperm to make a baby even though they won’t get to see the baby grow up which seems really sad.

      Another good question
To be honest, i would doubt it. If the woman was dying, then it may be unlikely she would survive to see the pregnancy through – and if not, it may raise ethical issues about knowingly creating “motherless” children.
Similarly if you were very ill, the stresses and strains of all the procedures you have to go through for IVF may make you much more ill, and so ethically i’m not sure you could put an ill patient through that.
Having said that, i’m not 100% sure on the guidelines, they are just my feelings

If you are the man then yes, you and your partner can have IVF, however if you’re the woman you probably wouldn’t be well enough to cope with the stress that a pregnancy puts on your body. There is also the very difficult question of whether it’s rignt to deliberately bring a child into the world without one of it’s parents. Most people say that as long as the couple have thought about it very carefully and the parent who is alive has lots of support then it would be OK. It has happened in this country, a lady called Diane Blood had a baby after her husband had died. What do you think?
