• Question: Don't you ever find being a scientist boring?

      No, never boring. Hard work, a bit stressful, difficult…. sometimes. But never boring….. (which is why i like it)

      Of course!! Like any job there are boring and tedious bits to being a scientist. Once i worked for 14 months to try and get one aspect of my work to work – hugely frustrating but when it finally worked, I will never forget that feeling!
      But different people find different things interesting/boring so you can’t really predict which bits you won’t like! Personally I find writing up my research to be the most boring part of my job, but it is a necessary evil – unless you tell other people what you have found out/achieved you won’t get any more funding as other people will think you’re not doing anything!!

      No. Sometimes I find some of the meetings boring but they’re not really about the science more about the changes in teh rules in the NHS etc. To be honest I try to skive out of as many of them as possible but don’t tell anyone.

      No!! Everyday is different and throughout the day I do so many different things I never get a chance to be bored! For example I can be on labour ward in the morning collecting placentas (once the baby is born) and then in the afternoon measuring genes. There is lots of interaction and discussion of data in are group also and as the research project develops the methods used change and more and more things are discovered which makes it really exciting!

      To be honest, I do find a lot of the meetings a bit boring. I only go if I have to.

      But don’t tell my boss!

      I think being a scientist is a very intersting varying career where you never know what to expect next. As no two patients are the same and everyone has their unique problems which we are required to investigate and report back to the referring doctors. Then the doctors can make treatment plans for the patients based upon the laboratory finding.

      I work as a part of a multi-disciplinary team made up of doctors, nurses, scientists and aminstrative staff.
