      Hi all!
If I won the money I would donate it to a charity called “KIND”. This charity aims to provide social and science education for some of the most disadvantaged children in the UK. Their belief is that all children deserve the same start/education in life and by providing them with this education, these children might be able to see what else is out there for them to achieve and hopefully provide them with the motivation and skills to change their lives. I found this charity online and thought the ideal behind their work was great and one that I hadn’t eally seen before. I hope you’ll agree it is a worthwhile charity, and if you want any more information on it, visit tehir website http://www.KIND.org.uk

      Hi there,
My plan is to pay a camera-man for a day or two to come into our lab and make a small video of what we do, and why, chat with a couple of the students in the lab etc etc. Maybe a 20 min video. Like, a day in our lab!
I’d get this made into a DVD, and have a copy sent to each of the classes ive webchatted with, and hopefully, each of the schools in IAS (if the money streches that far).

      Hi Everyone

I have been giving this a lot of thought. I think I would put the money towards an advertising campaign to increase people’s awareness of the symptoms of stroke in Essex where I work.

A stroke is a ‘brain attack’. A stroke is what happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to the brain. Without a blood supply, brain cells can be damaged or destroyed and won’t be able to do their job. This can affect lots of different parts of the body. If the part of the brain that controls how you move your legs is damaged, you might not be able to walk. If it damages the part that controls speech, you might not be able to talk.

The faster someone gets to hospital after a stroke, the sooner they get treated and the less the damage to the brain will be. So its really important that people know how to recognise when someone’s had a stroke so they can call 999 straight away.

There is a really simple campaign called ACT FAST – FAST stands for how recognise when someone has had a stroke –
F – Facial weakness – can the person smile? Has their mouth or eye drooped?
A – Arm weakness – can the person raise both arms?
S – Speech problems – can the person speak clearly and understand what you say?
      T – Time to call 999.

Here’s weblink to the campaign –
      http://www.stroke.org.uk/information/recognising_stroke_with_the_fast_test/index.html

I think this would be allowed under the rules of I’m a Scientist.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? WOULD THAT BE A GOOD USE OF THE MONEY?

      Jo

I would use it to allow school students to visit my lab and do some experiments themselves. I have developed some experiments that they could do in small groups. This way they would get to learn how to use scietific equipment and learn a bit about the topics we research.
